A couple weeks before the Women’s March on Washington, Steffie and I were on the phone discussing our plans. She was getting ready to travel to Washington D.C. I was devising a concept for the video I planned to shoot at the Phoenix Women's March. We got to thinking.
#girlcrew is currently in different parts of the country and world, making it a bit challenging to work on projects together. But here we were, given the opportunity to work together despite the thousands of miles between us.
After a few dozen emails with Juul and Tish, we had a production schedule. Juul would be first in Amsterdam, 6 hours later Steffie started in DC, then Tish in New York, and finally myself in the very west, Phoenix.
The Women's March was truly a march around the world. In one 24-hour time span, people stood together, as one, defying both time and distance.
Juul: "When the march in Amsterdam was wrapping up, I saw that Steffie was prepping in D.C. and she sent some of the first signs she saw. When I went to sleep Liz was still filming all the way in the west in Arizona. This way it really felt like Amsterdam was passing on the torch westwards to Washington, and so on. Like no woman around the world fell asleep without another woman continuing the march. A truly heartwarming and empowering day despite of being in the midst of hatred and saddening news.”
Steffie: "I was in D.C. for both the inauguration and the Women's March on Washington and the contrast between the two days could not have been bigger. On Friday I had to listen to Trump supporters yelling 'fake news' and calling reporters 'liars', while walking around with my press pass on Saturday was the opposite. Women kept thanking me for being there to document this truly historic moment and mentioned how cool it was to see a female camera operator. And you know what? They're right, that is pretty cool. But what's even cooler was knowing that Juul had already gotten some amazing footage and that Tish and Liz were about to start filming soon too. I realized that all the creative and witty signs (easily one of my favorite things about this march) I was seeing that day, they were seeing them as well.
